Twice each year, the setting sun lines up exactly right with the iconic Scripps Pier at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla. Of these two chances every year, more often than not the sunset will be obscured by clouds or marine layer... or the sky will be so crystal clear that you'll get no color at all. On the night that I got this shot, we were blessed with just enough light cloud cover on the horizon to get this beautiful orange effect. (I'm not sure, but it's possible that the color in the sky may have been influenced by the Springs Fire up in Ventura County.)
I've seen quite a few references to this photo as "Scrippshenge"—I think the name might stick!
